The Workflow
The process starts when you sign in and connect a brokerage account. From there, SharpeShare uses the linked brokerage activity to build a private performance view, plus a link when you want to share your return.
1. Sign In and Connect a Brokerage Account
You sign in, then connect your broker through Plaid. Read-only: SharpeShare asks Plaid for investment accounts only, so it can't trade, move money or change anything in your account. That gives the dashboard a real transaction history to work from instead of requiring manual data entry or repeated copy/paste cleanup. How SharpeShare keeps your data secure.
2. Turn Brokerage Activity Into Performance History
Once the account is connected, SharpeShare turns brokerage activity into a structured performance history. This gives you a consistent record to review instead of a collection of disconnected trade notes.
SharpeShare analyzes stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, closed-end funds, REITs, crypto and cash. Investments such as options, bonds, CDs and loans are excluded: SharpeShare imports the rest of the account and says what it excluded (FAQ).
3. Calculate Returns and Risk Metrics
SharpeShare measures a daily time-weighted return: each day's change leaves out the money moved in or out that day, and the days are compounded. Dividends, interest and capital-gain payouts count as return; fees and taxes count against it. From that return it calculates Largest decline (maximum drawdown) and, in the Pro plan, Risk-adjusted return (the Sharpe ratio). Next to it, the Performance tab shows the dollars: current value, net contributions and investment growth.
4. Compare Against the S&P 500
The dashboard also supports benchmark comparison against the S&P 500, a broad U.S. stock benchmark. SharpeShare compares with the S&P 500 (SPY) as a total return, dividends included, on the same days. That gives investors a familiar reference for seeing how the portfolio performed over the same period.
5. Share Your Return With a Link
When you want to share performance, SharpeShare makes a picture and a link for the account. Both show, as percentages, your return since the first day SharpeShare can measure for the account and the S&P 500's over the same dates, with the chart. Both are marked "Broker-verified": the holdings and transactions behind the return come straight from your broker, read-only through Plaid, and SharpeShare computes the return from them. Neither shows dollar amounts or holdings, and you can turn the link off at any time.
Why This Workflow Matters
- Connected source: the dashboard starts from brokerage data instead of manual entry.
- Consistent calculations: the same performance method stays tied to the same source.
- Benchmark context: the S&P 500 comparison stays tied to the portfolio view.
- Risk visibility: drawdown and other metrics stay alongside the return story.
- Sharing: a picture and a link show your return vs the S&P 500 as percentages, without rebuilding charts by hand.
In SharpeShare
SharpeShare is built to reduce the manual work around tracking, comparing, and sharing portfolio performance. Instead of managing the workflow in separate spreadsheet tabs, you can review the connected dashboard in one place and share your return as a picture or a link when you choose.
